we came and we conquered and tattooed our bodies
and placed all our hope in the colors and the pain

except for the ones who we fathomed unwanting
those were the leaders we followed untrained

and when the time came we stood tall and unyielding
and all of our fears had been reckoned in vain

but the years passed like freight trains in desolate places
and called back our doubts as we kneeled in the rain.

we loved and embraced though we knew we weren't meant to
trusting our souls to the blood and the flame

we grew with each other and stumbled in one heap
our falling apart was predictable things

and when the sun rose we could see a bit better
how the glue that we used could not fix anything

but the years passed on moth wings and failed to betray us
we could not be bothered to remember our names
